OSP: Man arrested on DUII charge after running over two Colton students
COLTON, Ore. -- A Sandy-area man was arrested on DUII and assault charges after he struck two Colton high school students attempting to walk across Highway 211 in Colton.
The two victims were reported in a marked crosswalk when they were struck during halftime of the school's football game. The male student victim is reported to be in intensive care at Oregon Health Sciences University. The female student victim was treated and released from Meridian Park Hospital.
Updated information from Oregon State Police Trooper Aaron Jackson indicates on October 8, 2009 at approximately 7:30 p.m. two high school students were attempting to walk across Highway 211 at South Wall Street in a marked crosswalk from the north to the south when they were struck by an eastbound 2007 Suzuki sport utility vehicle driven by DANNY THOMAS JONES, age 56, from Sandy.
The male victim identified as THOMAS M. STEPHENS, age 17, came to rest on the westbound side of Highway 211 east of the intersection with serious injuries. The female victim identified as DESTINY YORK, age 16, came to rest in the crosswalk on the west side of the highway with minor injuries. STEPHENS was transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health Sciences University. YORK was transported by ground ambulance to Meridian Park Hospital where she was treated and released for minor injuries.
Subsequent investigation at the scene led to the arrest of JONES for DUII, Assault in the Third Degree, and Assault in the Fourth Degree. He was lodged at the Clackamas County Jail.
OSP troopers from the Portland Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Colton Fire Department and Canby Police Department assisted at the scene.
Highway 211 was closed during the scene investigation and medical response until about 10:40 p.m.
