Medford Co-op begins construction

MEDFORD, Ore -- Construction began with the strike of a hammer to dry wall as members of the Medford Co-op gathered to see the fruits of their labor.

A dream, years in the making came to fruition Thursday as the plans to open a new hub for fresh produce became a reality.

The Medford Coop is expected to bring at least 25 new jobs and more than six million dollars back into the local economy, said Jim Sims President of the Medford Co-op.

This will be the first community-owned, full service food store.

The Medford Co-op almost didn't make it. Limited funding threatened to stop the construction, but the community stepped up and fundraised. Local sponsors contributed to the cause and the co-op exceeded their goal of half a million dollars.

"It's important for us to build community. We're part of a strong community and this is I know an important value," said Medford Co-op Vice President John Miele.

The co-op will bring more than just a taste of the local community but new jobs and a boost in the economy.

Jim Sims, President of the Medford Co-op said, "This should be a lesson to all of us. Keep your money at home and lets be successful."

Co-op supporters who attended the event had a strong sense of pride they were able to bring change in Medford.

"I think it important for people to say, 'wow' there are ways we can make a difference and change the world," said co-op member Lynn Howe.
