Texting is just part of the school day
- 80% of teens say they've never gotten in trouble for texting
- 17% say they text constantly during class
- Over 70% don't think texting in class is wrong
MEDFORD ORE. – Many teenagers can’t go one class period without texting.
According to a new study by textPlus, 17% of teenagers text constantly while in class.
Denis Ambriocio says when he is bored in class he turns to his cell phone for entertainment. He estimated that he texts about eight times during one class period.
“I spend more time of my phone then in class,” said Ambriocio.
Ashland High School has a no cell phone policy. Students’ cell phones are supposed to be turned off during class periods. If they get caught using their cell during class, a teacher may take it away until the end of the school day.
Spanish Professor Dana Rensi says the rules maybe changing though.
“We’re writing a policy and a permission sheet for parents,” said Rensi.
Rensi says Ashland School District wants to make sure using text messaging in classrooms would not cost anything for families.
“The kids are interested in each other,” said Rensi. “They want to communicate.”
Rensi hopes integrating cell phones into her classroom will engage her students more.
“They’re little computers so we may as well take the advantage of that and use it for interactive learning,” said Rensi.
