BEATTY, OR, Beatty

Bat-wielding man shot in Beatty in dispute over bottle of rum

BEATTY, Ore. -- Klamath County authorities believe a dispute over a missing bottle of rum prompted a shooting inside a Beatty home.

Sheriff Tim Evinger says 24-year-old Mark Farrell was shot late Tuesday after entering a home with a baseball bat and trying to strike 21-year-old Jim Westman.

Westman fired one round from a .22-caliber rifle, hitting Farrell in the right forearm.

The sheriff says Farrell, though shot, continued to try to hit Westman with the bat.

The incident ended when Westman's mother grabbed the bat from Farrell and hit him on the head several times.

Farrell was in good condition at Sky Lakes Medical Center Wednesday.

District Attorney Ed Caleb says he's waiting for law enforcement reports to determine if the case will be sent to a grand jury.
