Fire Season Starts Friday

Starting Friday, June 19, you won't be allowed to burn any debris piles in Jackson and Josephine counties.  That means ditch burning and backyard burning aren't allowed either.  Burn barrels are allowed but only until June 30th.

Tyler McCarty of Oregon Department of Forestry in Central Point says, "People say when we get rain early in the spring the grass grows out and that is a potential to have some big fires...But you never know.  You never know."  ODF says one reason you never really know when a fire could start is because most fires are actually started on accident by people.

That's why ODF is already preparing, whether the weather calls for it or not.  Around 45 crew members are finishing up there classes and learning how to use all the equipment to respond quickly and safely.

Fire season in the city of Ashland also starts on Friday.

Some advice from Ashland Fire Rescue:

Make your address visible to crews who might respond to a fire at or near your home.

Clear brush, dead leaves, and branches away from windows, gutters, and driveways.

Keep your grass short.
