UPDATE: Grants Pass Woman Who Didn't Know She Was Pregnant Gives Birth to Full-Term Baby
GRANTS PASS -- Grants Pass Department of Public Safety reported this morning that a 9-1-1 dispatcher helped a woman give birth last week to a baby she didn't know she was carrying to full term.
At about 7 a.m. March 23, dispatchers got "a frantic call" from a woman on Medart Lane reporting that her 38-year-old sister was having a baby -- not especially unusual except that the mother wasn't aware she was pregnant.
The sister told the 9-1-1 dispatcher Marci Haack that the baby's head was out, but the baby was not breathing and was purple, according to Deputy Police Chief Laura Zeliff. Haack gave instructions to the sister on how to clean out the baby’s airway so it could breathe and a baby boy was delivered very quickly. Zeliff said the baby was born full-term.

Haack calmed the sister and gave instructions on how to wrap the baby, protect the umbilical cord, and put the baby on the mother’s chest to maintain the baby’s warmth while medical and fire/rescue personnel were en route.
Within five minutes of the delivery, American Medical Response personnel and Grants Pass Department of Public Safety Fire/Rescue were on scene. The mother and baby were taken to Three Rivers Community Hospital for treatment and at last report are now at home. The pair and the sister who called 9-1-1 are scheduled to meet the dispatcher who helped them out on Wednesday.
