MORE FROM THE HERALD AND NEWS

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- Oregon State Police say a couple from Dorris, Calif., were killed Thursday night in a head-on collision on the Klamath Falls Southside Expressway Bypass that also critically injured the couple's great-grandson.

OSP says the 22-year-old driver from Klamath Falls of the other vehicle involved may have been intoxicated. She and her passenger suffered minor injuries in the crash on the expressway, a section of Highway 140 near the intersection with Washburn Way/Midland Highway.

OSP Lt. Jason Westfall says at 7:02 p.m. a 2009 Toyota Corolla driven by Carrie Ames, 22, from Klamath Falls, was eastbound on the Southside Bypass near Washburn Way when it veered across the center line and collided head-on with a westbound 2000 Dodge Stratus driven by Don Barton, 66, from Dorris, Calif.

Barton and his wife, Donna, 62, were pronounced deceased at the scene. Their 6-year-old great-grandson, Daba Phillips, also from Dorris, was critically injured. The victims were using safety restraints and the car's airbags deployed. Daba was in a child booster seat in the right rear seating location. He was transported by air ambulance to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland.

AMES and passenger Jackie Mankins, 18, from Klamath Falls, were transported by ambulance to Sky Lakes Medical Center with minor injuries. Both were using safety restraints and the car's airbags deployed.

OSP patrol troopers and Criminal Investigations Division detectives from Klamath Falls and Central Point area command offices are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Klamath County District Attorney's Office.

Klamath County Sheriff's Office, Klamath Falls Police Department, Klamath County Fire District 1, and ODOT assisted at the scene. California Highway Patrol assisted OSP with next of kin notification.
