Propane Tanks In Rental Truck May Have Exploded

An explosion next to a home near McCloud blew the house off of the foundation and collapsed several walls inside.

The house is on Memeo Road about two miles south of McCloud.

The explosion came from a a large Penske moving van that was parked about 15 feet from the house. The cargo box on the moving van along with all of the contents were destroyed.  The cab of the van was damaged beyond repair.  A preliminary damage estimate is about $300,000.00.

Three people were injured: 70-year old Edward Lujan and his wife, 62-year old Susan Lujan, who were in the truck, and 45-year old Michelle Michaelsen, who lives at the Memeo Road home and was sitting on the porch at the time of the explosion.

The only one still hospitalized is Susan Lujan, who is in Mercy Medical Center in Redding.

Witnesses said a barbeque and two propane tanks had been loaded into the van, but he could not think of anything else flammable inside it. Witnesses report hearing a loud "pop." They say they did not see any fire or smoke but saw debris flying everywhere.
