Celebrating Labor Day at home for a cause

Labor Day is no day off for some:

Southern Oregon Labor Council hosted a barbeque to advocate for awareness of working people and the unemployed.

Several politicians came to campaign and advocate for the cause.

Support organizations also attended to increase membership and showcase their programs.

TOUVELLE PARK, Ore. -- This Labor Day weekend members and supporters of the Southern Oregon Labor Council hosted a barbeque to celebrate their cause.

All the normal fixings of a Labor Day party were spread out throughout Touvelle Park, Monday. There was steaming barbeque with hamburgers, hot dogs and rich pot of beans. Parents and their children were playing horseshoes and badminton.

What was the difference between this barbeque and your normal Labor Day party?

There were posters to accompany the music and games--ones that read unemployment statistics and political slogans to bring jobs into the local community.

For the people in attendance, this was a true celebration of Labor Day.

Jim Alexander, President of the Southern Oregon Labor Council said this year we needed to pay closer attention to the current unemployment situation.

"[There is] a higher sense of urgency about the number of people that are unemployed and the people under-employed--the ones that have part time jobs that like to work full time and the folks that have just given up looking for work. It's an astounding number."

Politicians made their rounds, beginning their campaigns at the start of the picnic. Volunteers from several support organizations came to offer help and increase memberships.

"Labor Day is a worker's day," said Alexander.

At the end of they day, what did they want?

"Higher awareness of the issues that are affecting working people," Alexander said.

They say question is, when will they get it?
