OSP: Toddler killed, parents seriously injured in I-84 crash; seatbelts not used

LA GRANDE, Ore. -- A child died and the parents were seriously injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash on I-84 eastbound near mile post 260, west of LaGrande, according to the Oregon State Police.

At about 6:55 pm, a 2005 Nissan pickup driven by Salavat Mechenko, 22, from Willow Springs, Mo., was eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 260 when he failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle left the highway and rolled over in the median. Salavat Mechenko, and his daughter, Alice Mechenko, 3 months, both were ejected from the vehicle. Alice Mechenko was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Salavat's wife, Anna Mechenko, 20, was not ejected. Salavat and Anna Mechenko both suffered serious injuries in the crash. Initial investigation suggests they were not using seatbelts.
