Firefighters Train to Fight Remote Fires

Merlin-It's an experience that not many get to have.

The Siskiyou Rappel Crew spent the day practicing a very specific exercise. In pairs of two, firefighters were lowered from a helicopter from over one hundred feet in the air. The simulation is intended to replicate lowering firefighters into a remote area by helicopter.

Tim Lyda is a firefighter who is a part of the Siskiyou Rappel Crew. "Were going to be the quickest on scene so the smaller the fire the easier it is to put out" he explained.

Before they drop out of the helicopter they meticulously check gear. Gear that one fire fighter described as "life bearing equipment." They describe the opportunity as valuable practice and study their techniques. The idea is to practice the scenario over and over again, so when need be, they can act with out hesitation.
