Plane Crash, Haystack Peak

Memorial Service Set for Eagle Point Pilot

An Eagle Point man who died this weekend in an Arizona plane crash will be memorialized at Trail Christian Fellowship this Saturday as a young man with "a fire for life."

Daylon Harrington, 25, was flying as a passenger with pilot Scott Resnick, 39, of Beaverton, when their plane crashed near Prescott, Ariz.

Harrington, the son of Gary and Valerie Harrington of Eagle Point, has strong ties to the Rogue Valley and Eagle Point. His memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday at Trail Christian Fellowship, 18881 Highway 62, just south of Shady Cove.

Tobin Shackelford of Medford has known Harrington since 2005 when the two worked together at Superior Aviation at the Medford Airport.

Yavapai County sheriff’s officials say the plane lost radar contact with the FAA shortly after midnight May 23, when Resnick provided his last known coordinates to dispatchers.

Several hours later, sheriff’s officials found the crash site and both men inside dead. The crash site is near Haystack Peak between Prescott and Seligman. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

Shackelford, aviation services manager at Paradise Ranch Resort in Grants Pass, said Harrington was studying aeronautics in Portland to add to his already impressive array of skills as a pilot and aviation mechanic. Harrington piloted numerous Christian missions, as far north as Alaska and south to Brazil, and is remembered as an evangelical man of faith.

With a large turnout expected for Harrington's memorial service, Shackelford said he is trying to arrange a flyover of the service. He said people will be flying in from all over the country and Canada to pay their respects to Harrington, who despite his young age had friends and contacts across the country. A "couple scholarships" are in the works as well in Harrington's honor, Shackelford said.

"He was just a great kid, had a passion for aviation," said Shackelford, who learned of Harrington's death via Twitter while backpacking on Grayback Mountain this weekend.

Shackelford said he had the utmost respect for Harrington: "If there's anyone I would want my son to grow up to be, it would be Daylon. He just had a fire for life."

Resnick is survived by his wife, Holly, and her four children.
