Accused Bend Bank Robber is an Ex-Cop Fired for Stealing Marijuana Evidence
BEND, Ore. -- A man accused of holding up a Bend bank this week is a former police officer fired for stealing marijuana from an evidence locker.
Police say 54-year-old Charles Harpster robbed more than $1,000 from the Bank of the Cascades on Tuesday. He did not display a gun, but allegedly told a teller he had one. He and his wife, who police say drove the getaway car, were caught at a La Pine tavern, where they were playing a lottery machine.
Harpster was a police officer in Henrico County, Va., until three years ago. Nearing retirement, he stole the marijuana and shared it with his wife. Both pleaded guilty to a drug charge, but received suspended sentences and paid a small fine.
