Police: NorCal Cold Case Solved

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Police in Northern California have made an

arrest in the cold-case murder of a Meals on Wheels recipient.

Sacramento police on Friday arrested 56-year-old Donald Carter

in the 1989 killing of 80-year-old Sophia McAllister. Authorities

had found McAllister's beaten body in her home after a Meals on

Wheels volunteer noticed she hadn't picked up her food delivery.

The case languished for years was reopened in 2005. DNA evidence

was linked to Carter in March of this year while he was being

booked on an unrelated narcotics charge.

Police say Carter lived 1½ blocks from McAllister at the time of

the killing.

Carter is being held without bail in county jail.
