Plea Bargain Talks For DUII Sand Rail Deaths; Victims' Family Upset

TILLAMOOK, Ore. -- A prosecutor says plea bargaining is under way in the case of an accident that killed two people at the Sand Lake Recreation Area in Tillamook County.

The negotiations have made family members of the victims unhappy, though. They want 48-year-old David Rieman of Yacolt, Wash., to stand trial as a grand jury indicted him: charged with manslaughter, assault and drunken driving.

Rieman was driving an off-road vehicle known as a sand rail (similar to a dune buggy) in September when it collided with another sand rail. Two people died and two were seriously injured.

Tillamook District Attorney William Porter said Thursday that Rieman has until Sept. 3 to consider a deal that includes pleading guilty to multiple charges concerning all victims.
