MEDFORD, Ore. -- South Medford High School kicked off the school year and opened their doors to their underclassmen, Tuesday.
For the Stewart family, enrollment at South would be the first of many new things for them in Medford. Gregory Stewart moved his family from California to Oregon, two months ago. For his daughter, Dana Chavez this would be the day she enrolled at new school for her last year of high school.
"It's a bit overwhelming at first but exciting at the same time. I'm looking forward to being apart of the school, being a parent and a part of her academic career," said Stewart.
They waited patiently for their number to be called. They were not alone; the line to register was consistent throughout the day as eager upperclassmen geared up for their last years of high school. For some, they would be the first class to graduate out of South.
"It feels pretty cool that no one else has graduated from here and it's me first, and my first year here, too," said Chavez.
Project Manager Mike Day said the school was looking to incorporate technology with education.
Each classroom is equipped with some form of new technology, like smart boards and projectors.
The main courtyard of the complex will soon feature wireless internet, said Day.
Kevin Campbell, Principal of South Medford said there are high expectations for the upcoming school year.
"It's very nice for us to have a facility that our students will really flourish in and you know we're just committed to having a good experience for kids."
Each block of the school is divided into small communities based off of academic interests. Teachers hope these small communities will foster a bond between students.
