UPDATED: NorCal Girl, 3, Tumbles Out Apartment Window Onto Awning; Mom Oblivious
UPDATE 6/11/09: The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office reported Thursday morning that the only people in the apartment were the 17-year-old boy and the child's mother. A report is being submitted to the Siskiyou County District Attorney's office seeking child endagerment charges.
MONTAGUE, Calif. -- A man working on the historic Opera House building retrieved a 3-year-old girl who had fallen out of a second-story window and onto an awning and delivered her to an apparently oblivious 25-year-old mother in a trash-filled apartment, the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office reported.
At about 3:50 p.m. Tuesday the sheriff’s office got a call from a Yreka man working on the building who said he heard a child crying and found the little girl had apparently fallen from one of the apartment windows at the rear of the building and onto an awning 8-10 feet below. He told police he got a ladder and brought her down. He said the little girl was crying but did not appear to be injured.
The man told police he then banged on the apartment door where the girl lived until the girl’s mother finally opened the door and he gave the child to her.
After the man's call, sheriff’s deputies responded and contacted Michelle Elizabeth Burnett, 21, (see update above), and a 17-year old male inside the apartment. Deputies reported a foul smell coming from the apartment and trash piled several feet high in the kitchen and rotten food, beer cans and piles of dirty clothes all through the apartment. A used condom was on the floor in the living room.
Child Protective Services was called to the apartment and took the 3-year-old girl and another child approximately 18-months-old into protective custody. An ambulance was called and medical staff decided the child should be transported to Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka to make sure she had not been injured in the fall; she was later released to Child Protective Services.
The case remains under investigation.
