Full Chain Restrictions No Longer In Effect On Siskiyou Summit

With weather conditions worsening and the temperature dropping rapidly, full chain restrictions were imposed shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday on the Siskiyou Summit, southbound lanes.

Callers to KTVL reported at 7 p.m. that southbound vehicles were being turned back from the summit, even those with chains and four-wheel drive vehicles, but this couldn't be immediately confirmed.

The weather is supposed to abate somewhat later tonight and turn to a 20 percent chance of snow flurries by Saturday.

Chains were not required in Highway 140, nor at Sexton summit on Interstate 5 to the north of the Rogue Valley. Roads in the Klamath Basin were relatively clear with no chain restrictions.

Chain restrictions on southbound I-5 at the Siskiyou Summit typically mean a boom in overnight business in Ashland at the south exit, everything from food and lodging to chain sales.

Chain restrictions were removed early Saturday morning.
