Specimens from Southern Oregon to be Tested for Swine Flu
Swine flue is linked to influenza "A". But just because patients test positive for that virus, doesn't mean they have the swine flu. Health officials say type "A" is a virus that can cause epidemics and the most serious illnesses. It hasn't hit Southern Oregon, but the problem is, if it does, it's a version our bodies aren't prepared to handle yet.
The phones are ringing as people call for more information on the swine flu. And asking for information is where we hope it stops. Dr. Mona McArdle of Valley Immediate Care in Medford says, "We sent at least two specimens off. One came back positive for influenza 'A'". So, at some clinics it doesn't stop at questioning. They're now testing. And with one probably case of the swine flu up north, concerns are hitting home.
McArdle says, "It's not if, it's when. And we'll probably see some in the valley in the next couple of days."
At hospitals and clinics you might be asked to put on a mask if you come in with flu like symptoms. But the mask isn't the best thing to keep you safe on the streets. Dr. Jeff Williams at Providence Medical Center says, "Common sense will serve you well: hand washing, cover your mouth, keep a good distance."
Keeping a good distance is what many of us hope for the bug. Dr. Jim Shames of Jackson County Public Health says, "I can imagine a scenario where it doesn't hit Southern Oregon." He continues, "There is a glimmer of hope. We're coming upon warm weather and when it's hot out influenza doesn't spread."
And that could give health experts enough time to close the door on the virus.
When summer comes the question then is, 'Will the swine flu just die out'? Or, will it find some other way to start back up again once the cold starts creeping in? Experts say either scenario could happen. Right now, they say we just have to try to keep it away for as long as we can.
If you have any questions or concerns about the swine flu the Health Department has put up a hotline. That number is 774-3880. You can call from 7am-7pm on weekdays.
