Veteran frustrated he can't get H1N1 vaccine from V.A.

V.A. has limited supply for highest risk patients

WHITE CITY, Ore. -- A local veteran is frustrated he cannot get the H1N1 vaccine from White City's V.A.

The V.A. only has about 50 of the 100 vaccines it was issued earlier this month, and those doses are reserved for the highest risk patients.

George Long of Grants Pass has Type II Diabetes, and his condition does not place him in the priority tier.

Though shots are available elsewhere, he says he does not want to go to a free clinic because he does not want to take a vaccine away from someone who does not have the option to go to the V.A.

He says he should be inoculated so that he can prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus.

A nurse at the V.A. says they do not know when the next shipment of H1N1 vaccines will be.

Regional health officials have said H1N1 appears to have peaked in Southern Oregon as fewer people are reporting being sick from the illness.
