B-17 Bomber Flies the Skies in Medford

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

You've no doubt heard of the B-17 bomber, the massive, airplane with long range capabilities and its own firepower that helped turn the tide in World War II in America's favor. Now that the tour of the "aluminum overcast" has the plane in medford, you have a chance to not only tour a flying fortress but also take a ride.

Inside you will see waist guns that aren't in use anymore, however, they still stick out the side like they did almost 60-years ago. From the cock pit to an amazing view of the Rogue Valley from the panorama.

Monday a trip into the sky was a blast from the past for World War II veteran Wally Walton who says he hasn't been in a B-17 since the 1950's, "It's going to be awfully small, it's a pretty small airplane compared to today."

After a 20-minute trip above Medford Walton says it was worth it.

Most of the plane should have been pretty familiar to Walton. Pilot Rick Fernalld says very few things have changed, "Primarily, theres a lot of authenticity there, but different filter systems for the engines to be able to check on their conditions more accurately, upgraded avionics that allows better navigation and situation awareness.."

Not to mention the seats and seat belts, they are what they call call military style, a far cry from reclining seats a tray table and beverage service.

Should you ride the bomber, air sickness bags and earplugs will be available.

The tour will stay in Medford through Wednesday, for times, location and ticket information click here.
