Possible Home Security Scam

Comments 0

Medford police are looking for scam artists targeting people at their homes.

Police say the scam started a few weeks ago and already one person's home has been broken into and burglarized.

Police say scam artists could be roaming the streets, knocking on people's front doors, asking if homeowners have security systems, maybe trying to sell them one, or maybe just trying to get inside their homes to see what they have and steal it.

Katy Winslow's grandchildren are growing up in the same Medford home she grew up in but she says more and more people are knocking on her door every year trying to scam her family.

"It's very scare because this stuff is going on everyday," she says.

She says she remembers a couple weeks ago when a young man in a tan jacket stopped by trying to sell her a new home security system to protect her and her grand kids.

After falling victim to scam artists in the past, this wise grandmother says she knows better and thinks it was a scam.

"You're better off just keeping your door lock and talking to them through your screen door and make sure they can't put their hand on your door handle and into your house," she says.

Even though Winslow talked the first man off her property, a second man stopped by a few days later. She say this one was a bit more demanding, trying to get into her house to sell her the same system.

"Never open your door to anybody and I don't care if it's somebody wanting to use your phone, it gives them the opportunity to see what you have and a chance to get into your front door," she says.

This grandma says she has too much to protect in her home to let just anybody through her front door.

Police say the victim in last month's burglary told them someone came to their door asking about their home security system.

A day later they were robbed.

Police are investigating possible suspects.

A new home security company in town that could be soliciting door to door or it could be the scam artists coming to your door.

Police say if you think you're being scammed call police.
