State Investigating Wastewater Discharge from Smith Frozen Foods
State environmental officials are investigating U.S. Senator Gordon Smith's frozen foods processing company because wastewater discharged from its Eastern Oregon plant got into a nearby creek.
The Department of Environmental Quality says Smith Frozen Foods contacted the agency last month to report an overflow from the company's lagoon at Weston that sent wastewater into Pine Creek.
The agency says the incident is still under investigation and no fine has been proposed against the company. Smith's company has been fined for similar spills in the past.
Smith is running for re-election this year against Democrat Jeff Merkley.
