Domestic Violence Hotline Calls Spike

National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

Jackson County Hotline: (541) 779-4357 or 1-888-609-4357.

Josephine County Hotline: (541) 479-9349 or 1-800-750-WCST (9278).

More people are calling domestic violence hot-lines for help.

Local crisis hotlines say there's a significant spike in the number of domestic violence victims calling for help.

Shannon Williams escaped domestic violence with two sons years ago.

Now she answers other women's calls for help every day.

"It's very rewarding to make a difference, to feel like you're making a difference," she says.

Making a difference to a growing number of women and children looking for a life line.

The number of calls into the Grants Pass Women's Crisis Support Team doubled this year and again from December to January.

"It's not our job to judge them it is our job to help them any way we can and to let them know its not their fault," she says.

Wlliams says the economy fuels the increase in two ways.

Etra financial pressures in an already violent home could lead more women to leave.

Pus, more women may come for help afraid of finding nothing on their own in a dry job market.

Either ways she says it's everybody's problem.

"If you have a mother, sister, neice or aunt it may affect you - if it isn't already - and taking a part is what is eventually what will end it I hope," she says.

End it for women just like her.
