KTVL in HDTV

KTVL in High Definition

It is the dawn of a new era in broadcasting! The Digital Transition is here!

KTVL's HD channel is now available on Charter Cable channel 780. Our HD channel is not yet available on satellite, but we hope it will be soon.

In 2001, KTVL became the first commercial TV station in Southern Oregon and Northern California to broadcast in High Definition. We are now rapidly approaching the congressionally mandated date of February 17, 2009; this is the time by which we must stop broadcasting in analog on channel 10.

Currently, KTVL broadcasts our digital signal on channel 35 from atop Mt. Ashland. Viewers with an HD TV with built-in digital tuners (or with a separate digital tuner connected to older digital TVs that do not have a built-in digital tuner) may be able to receive this signal using an outdoor or set-top antenna.

When you receive the digital signal by tuning to channel 35, your TV screen will tell you that you are receiving:

  • 10-1 - KTVL's broadcast of CBS in HD

  • 10-2 - KTVL's broadcast of The CW network in standard definition

  • 10-3 - KTVL's broadcast of CBS in standard definition

These are all digital channels and cannot be received without a digital tuner.

If your TV(s) is connected to cable or satellite, you should not notice any change in your KTVL signal after the February 17, 2009 cutoff date.

However, if you have any TV(s) that is not connected to these services and currently receive a signal over-the-air, you will need an over-the-air antenna and a converter box. These converter boxes are available at most electronics retailers.

Digital Translator Network

KTVL is the first TV station in the state to begin the process of installing digital translators. This network of translators will rebroadcast our digital signal to viewers in areas that cannot directly receive our signal from Mt. Ashland. Here's a summary of what is currently installed, and our timeline for some of our future digital translator installations:

  • Mt. Ashland Digital Transmitter: Digital Channel 35

(On February 18, 2009 we will begin broadcasting our digital signal on channel 10.)

  • Ashland/Phoenix/Talent: Digital Channel 47 (Baldy) is on now.

  • Klamath Basin: Digital Channel 19 (Stukel) is on now.

  • Lakeview: Digital Channel 15 (Grizzly Mtn.) is on now.

  • Grants Pass/Murphy/Williams: Digital Channel 25 (Gilbert Peak) is off-line awaiting FCC approval.

Keep checking for updates on additional digital translators as we sign them on!

If your TV(s) is connected to cable or satellite, you should not notice any change in your KTVL signal after the February 17, 2009 date. However, if you have any TVs that are not connected and currently receive their signal over-the-air, you will need an over-the-air antenna and a converter box. These converter boxes are available at most electronics retailers, including Larson’s Home Furnishings in Medford. You can get one or two $40 coupons from the Federal government to assist you in purchasing a converter box(es) by applying on the website below.
