This is Dunsmuir Elementary School
DUNSMUIR, Calif. -- Whether it's building a robot or taking a reading test on an iPad, hands-on learning is incorporated into learning at Dunsmuir Elementary School.
Older students are required to design and build robots out of legos and computer software.
"Once you connect it to the computer, you can make it move forward backwards, left, right, pretty much you name it," eighth grader Daniel Brashear said
The students work in groups together to create their robots.
"It teaches you to be smart and learn how to follow instruction and learn how to use a computer," seventh-grader Nick Lattanzio said.
Students also use other forms of technology, like Kindles and iPads in their classrooms.
Sixth grader Kaitlyn Edwards says she uses the Kindle to read digital books, instead of paperback.
"It's just fun, you don't have to turn the pages," said Edwards. "You just scroll down and it's right there."
Students say most of the Kindles were donated from someone in the community.
"Using the Kindles is just fun. Most schools don't get to use so it makes us different. It's really cool that most of ours were donated too" fifth-grader Naomi Johnson said.
Edwards says she then uses a laptop to take her Accelerated Reading tests. It's a online-reading comprehension program that quizzes students over certain books.
Edwards says it makes taking a test "Just more fun."
