Police make arrest in drive-by shooting cases
MEDFORD, Ore. -- An investigation into two apparent gang shootings has resulted in two arrests.
Medford Police and the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement team began investigating a gang shooting on March 8.
The March 8 shooting happened around 5:11 p.m. in the 1500 block of Bryant Street, according to a press release from the Medford Police Department.
When officers arrived at the Bryant Street scene, all the suspects and potential victims were gone.
However, police learned a silver Honda sedan filled with five to six Latino males dressed in red clothing pulled up to the residence.
The occupants --believed to be Nortenos -- confronted several other Latino males believed to be Surenos.
Police say one occupant fired a handgun but did not hit anyone.
A second shooting happened on March 9 around 1 a.m. This time, one person was shot. Police say the shooting initially went unreported and the injured party did not seek treatment at an area hospital.
In this second incident, police say five alleged Surenos members were walking along Chestnut Street and were approached by a red Saturn Vue occupied by alleged Nortenos members.
A shooter fired six to seven rounds into the group as they fled. A 22-year-old male was hit in the arm.
Police located one suspect on March 15 in an apartment in the 2500 block of Table Rock Road.
Inside the apartment, police found 16-year-old Ramon Santiago, a stolen WASR 7.62 assault rifle, three handguns and prescription pills. Police believe the teen is involved in the case.
The teen was arrested on the suspicion of unlawful possession of a firearm, theft of a stolen assault rifle and possession and distribution of a controlled substance.
Police identified Toby Alexander Martinez, 22, of Medford as the shooting suspect. They attempted to stop a car he was in on March 15, but the car's driver eluded police.
On April 3, Medford police officers and Jackson County Sheriff's office went to an address in the 5800 block of Table Rock Road, where they saw Martinez on the property.
Martinez ran from police. After a short chase, police captured him and arrested him on the suspicion of attempted murder, attempted assault, assault and attempting to elude an officer.
Martinez has been taken to the Jackson County jail; the teen has been taken to the Community Justice Juvenile Division.
