GRANTS PASS, Ore -- The Josephine County Board of Commissioners is putting four advisory questions on the ballot, asking voters for their opinions.
- First: Should commissioners look at combining the Grants Pass Public Safety and Josephine County Sheriff's Office?
- Second: Are federal timber funds a good source of money?
- Third: Should the county look at imposing a sales tax?
- Fourth: Do residents think the county's criminal justice system is meeting their needs?
The board has focused a lot of the questions on the state of public safety.
County Commissioner Simon Hare says the criminal justice system isn't functioning as it should, and the board is looking for ways to fix it, with the funds it has.
In the past, ideas like combining the police department and the sheriff's office haven't been popular. The county looked at in 1991, and the answer was no. A move like that would mean an increase in county taxes and a decrease in city ones.
Hare says depending on voters thoughts, commissioners will craft ballot measures for upcoming votes.
