YREKA, Calif -- City leaders in Yreka are sitting down with the Karuk tribe in confidential negotiations he topic of the meetings bringing a gambling establishment to town.
The Karuk tribe already has some property in mind land already in trust.
The site off Sharps road is above the Siskiyou Fairgrounds. The property was originally set aside for a tribal housing project but now Karuk leaders are hoping to build something bigger.
Chairman Russell Attebery says the tribe is hoping to construct a 75,000 square foot structure complete with an 80 plus room hotel with all the amenities.
City manager Steve Baker says where they are in the negotiation process is under wraps but what he can say is the casino would have a big impact on Yreka.
One of those impacts economic. The tribe says it would bring 200 jobs to the neighborhood.
Although the site is already in a trust the Karuk tribe still needs to get approval from both the governor and the federal government before they start rolling the project.
