MEDFORD, Ore -- More than 19,000 people in Jackson County found out this month they under paid on their property taxes.
In september the county figured out it was missing $540,000 from the budget. Meaning 19,173 people owed another $28 in taxes on average.
The Jackson County Assessor Josh Gibson says he's 80 percent sure the mistake happened because something was wrong with their software. "There's an option that exists which shouldn't exist and it shouldn't be touched changed or tweaked but it may have been," he said
The computer program calculates the money owed for each property, based on home value, and factors in every taxing district you belong to.The money problem came down to the software giving too much money to school districts and too little to urban renewal districts.
To make up for the mistake more than 19,000 people living in urban renwal districts had to write a check for an average of $28 while 400 others got a refund.
Gibson says no one in the county noticed the problem in fact it was an outside group that figured it out.
Seattle Northwest is a bonding company, it was working on the pools measure, helping public works to figure out funding. While the company was working on the project workers noticed there'd been a mess up on the taxing districts.
The assessor says the county is making the move to prevent the problem in the future, "we're converting out of that software system into a new one next year," Gibson said.
