MEDFORD, Ore.-Congress's decision on the Farm Bill could mean cuts for some programs for low-income families.
The 2008 Farm Bill expired at the end of September.
This has some dairy farmers wondering if the government will revert to the Agriculture Act of 1949 starting Jan. 1.
If Congress does not create a new bill soon, or extend the 2008 bill, the U.S. government will have to pay dairy farmers higher subsidies as stated in the 1949 Act.
Right now, that would be about $30 for every 100 pounds of milk.
Jim Krahn, the Executive Director of the Oregon Dairy Farmers Association (ODFA) feels the government will not be able to pay such high subsidies for long.
He adds, subsidies in his industry are becoming a thing of the past.
"It seems to be something that's going away in agriculture [...] assistance programs are more based on environmental issues and that sort of thing, rather than product assistance," says Krahn.
He says only about 20 percent of the bill affects dairy.
The majority of the legislature impacts other agriculture and programs such as WIC, SNAP and school lunches.
Some lawmakers, says Krahn, are looking for a new Farm Bill that would cut funds for some of these services.
