MEDFORD, Ore. - The City of Medford along with Lithia released plans to add-on to Lithia Commons. In those plans, is a new concert venue in the works.
$1.6 million has been set aside for the second park block of Lithia Commons. A performance venue is one of its big features.
Planners say performers and watchers will be able to use the stage and enjoy it for free.
In a town with a lot of concert options, the city says the new venue won't be competing with anything else.
"It's not intended to be in any way, shape or form perceived as a competitive side to Britt Gardens, for example, that is a true concert venue, this is a multi-use community facility, it's all designed for use for the public," Medford City Councilman Chris Corcoran said.
Planners say the stage could be used for many different events, such as weddings and it will always be available for free.
"We have free concerts in the park already on a regular basis, maybe there will be free concerts in this kind of facility, it's not designed to be fenced and have tickets taken," Corcoran said. "A performance venue could be a bride and groom standing on it, you could have a chili cook off, you're going to have farmer's markets down here, it's a multi-use facility designed for public gatherings with tons of uses."
Whatever event it draws in, could bring a boost to downtown businesses.
"It has the potential to be such a huge magnet for business development," Corcoran said.
The second park block could be completed as early as this fall.
The Britt Festival says it cannot comment about the new venue at this time but did say board members will be discussing it at a meeting Tuesday evening.
