GRANTS PASS, Ore. - St. Vincent de Paul in Grants Pass has been getting some big donations recently.
Usually a typical month brings in about $2,000 but in the month of August, the community donated more than $17,000 and in September they received more than $10,000.
"Donations were coming in constantly, seven to eight a day, checks and envelopes," Patricia Kissinger, the president of the Grants Pass St. Vincent de Paul, said.
Volunteers say October is off to a great start too.
The extra cash came at a time when it was most needed. The non-profit was so short on funds this summer, it was considering closing its doors.
But as of now, volunteers have enough money to keep feeding people until February.
"It was a feeling you can't believe, this community is absolutely the best," Kissinger said. "We were all just so much happier because we knew we were not going to close and that means a lot to all of us and to them, they have to have a place to eat."
Volunteers say it takes more than $5,000 a month to run the kitchen, which is open during the week.
The organization also just got more than $10,000 in grants to pay for kitchen equipment, new floors and an awning.
If you would like to donate your time or money, visit the Grants Pass St. Vincent de Paul at 757 Southeast 7th Street or call (541) 472-8579.
