GRANTS PASS, Ore. - A man is behind bars after the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety says he attacked one of its officers. That officer is suffering from scratches on his face and eye, as well as a swollen jaw.
Police say before Christopher Anthony assaulted the officer, he was causing problems at the local Walmart store, throwing beer and shoving an employee.
Officers caught up with him at the Arby's across the street.
When the officer tried to stop him from taking off, police say Anthony hit the officer in the face and tried to gouge his eyes.
A second officer tased Anthony and helped arrest him.
"If you assault one of my police officers you will go to jail in the city of Grants Pass," Deputy Chief Bill Landis said.
"He was charged with resisting arrest, interfering and assault on a public safety officer, besides the charges at Walmart," Landis said. "And in this case, whether he was stone cold sober or under the influence, it wouldn't matter to us as far as these charges."
Anthony is behind bars facing a total of seven different charges.
The officer was medically treated at the scene and is now recovering.
Grants Pass Police say they train for instances like this, that's why the back-up officer was quick to act, stopping the suspect from seriously injuring the officer.
