TALENT, Ore -- Demand for southern Oregon pears could be on the rise, thanks to a new trade agreement with China.
Ron Meyer is a local grower he says no matter how you swing it opening up China's ports to pears is good news for growers. Meyer is just about out of pears for the season but come this time next year might be exporting pears to China. He says even if he chooses not to pears going there means more demand in other foreign markets as well as the one here in the US.
One third of the pears grown in the US are exported, currently the biggest consumers are Canada, Mexico and Russia respectively. Meyers doesn't know where China will fit in. The country already grows pears but only the Oriental variety. Here in the Rogue valley growers produce the European varieties, and Meyer hope they will be popular.
One thing he does know is that increasing exports markets is always good news for pears, "I do believe we produce more pears than the domestic market could use," he said. Packing houses in Yakima have already began shipping out their pears this week.
Meyer says now he's just hoping for a new trade agreement with Japan to come through, he thinks European pears there would be a hot commodity
