MEDFORD, Ore -- Oregon teachers are testing out a new pilot program. None of the schools in southern Oregon are a part of it but district leaders say paying for performance is something they're looking at.
Only six districts in the state are part of the pilot program which rewards teachers based on student achievement. Teachers in the program get bonuses per school, based on how much improvement student's test scores showed. Right now the funds for the pilot program are coming from federal grants.
Medford School District Superintendent Phil Long says if the state adopts this accountability system it will be a challenge to fund without increased federal dollars. "You end up just slicing the resource pie differently, so do you eliminate teaching positions so you have the funding to do the incentive? it seems to kind of run counter to what we're trying to do here," Long said.
Long says there are other resources for students he would like to see funded before a bonue program for teachers. He says schools need to reverse the trend of cutting teachers, add more school days to the calendar and continue to educate already existing teachers.
Medford School District was forced to cut 40 licensed teachers in the last year.
