MEDFORD, Ore. -- The the sizzle of frying chicken wings can be music to any football fans ears.
"It's kind of a tradition -- wings, beer and football," said Chas Thomas, the owner of Flappers Wild West Wings.
This Super Bowl Sunday, Americans are expected to eat about 1.2 billion chicken wings. But those wings, Thomas said, are more expensive than ever.
"The prices have gone up ridiculously," he said.
Thomas says in the last two years the price for a case of wings in the Rogue Valley has tripled.
"Since we opened it was just under $40 a case," Thomas said. "And we're now paying $111 a case."
Agricultural experts say the increase is because of a recent drought. The price of feed went up, which means Ravens and 49ers fans are paying more.
Even at pizza places in Medford, like Papa John's, the wings are just as popular as the pies.
"Generally Halloween is a busy day," said franchise owner Jim Fry. "Before Thanksgiving is busy, and Superbowl ranks right up there."
Thomas says Flappers is stocking up with 3,000 wings just for the big day. Despite the increase in wholesale prices, he said the price for a basket of
wings has only gone up a dollar in the last year.
For the first time Thomas says they will be delivering orders on Super Bowl Sunday.
