The Siskiyou County Commission has increased the reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the gold theft case. Thieves broke into the courthouse on Feb. 1 and stole the county's gold display. The reward is now $50,000.
Commissioners OK'd the new reward after Sheriff Jon Lopey asked for an increase.
"We appreciate the board's unanimous support and assistance from other county leaders in securing this additional resource which should assist us in resolving this case," Lopey said in a press release.
To date, the sheriff's office has followed up on more than 100 leads. They have reached out to the Mariposa County to ensure the suspects arrested in a gold theft case there were not connected with the Siskiyou case.
Officials are working to match DNA collected from the crime scene to one or both of the suspects.
"We are convinced that this case will be solved, especially, considering the evidence we have retrieved," Lopey said.
If you have information, call the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office at (530) 841-2900.
