MEDFORD, Ore -- Logging isn't known as the safest profession and Thursday's incident could have been deadly when a falling log hit a man and rolled him hundreds of feet down an embankment.
Fellow loggers were there at the Applegate logging site for the whole thing.
Loggers worked fast to make sure the man stayed as comfortable as possible until firefighters got on scene. They say they go through medical and safety training in case of accidents like this.
Loggers also have GPS devices so they can tell rescue crews exactly where they are.
Applegate Fire District No. 9 responded to the call. Using their own GPS devices they located the logging site.
When search and rescue got on site they had to use ropes to navigate the rough steep terrain. Logging site makes for treacherous territory because often there is unstable debris on the ground.
Fire District No. 9 Operations Chief Chris Wolfard says the log that rolled over the man was a full sized tree, a foot in diameter, and weighing thousands of pounds.
When EMTs reached the man they say he wasn't in the best shape. Wolfard says he thinks the man was suffering from multiple broken bones and internal injuries.
Crews brought in a helicopter and life-flighted the logger to Asante Rogue Regional Hospital, where he's being treated.
