MEDFORD, Ore. -- With flu season here, doctors are debunking myths about the virus.
While the season is off to a slow start, doctors at Valley Immediate Care in Medford say they've given about 50 vaccinations in the last week.
Dr. Mona McArdle says the vaccination will most likely not make people sick with the flu, which tends to be a myth. McArdle explains some patients may have a reaction where they get the shot, or some are already infected with the virus when they get the shot.
"The recommendations really are that everybody get the vaccination at this point," McArdle said. "Especially after the swine flu outbreak a couple of years ago. I think it became more clear that it's not just the elderly. There are other vulnerable populations."
McArdle says the best defense against the flu is to have good hygiene, and to remember to wash your hands often.
