GRANTS PASS, Ore. - Oregon State Police is assisting the Josephine County Sheriff's Office with more top priority cases.
"Even though it's in the county, we as an agency, Oregon State Police feel it's important to still serve the citizens of Oregon and the citizens of Josephine County," Sgt. Jeff Proulx said.
The Sheriff's Office just doesn't have the manpower or the money as the reality of budget cuts set in.
OSP recently took the lead on a death investigation involving a rollover crash this weekend in Grants Pass. It was the Sheriff's case but lack of investigators and funding wouldn't give the case the justice it deserves.
"This is a several day investigation, therefore I would end up taking somebody off the street and assigning them to an investigation for a period of at least a couple days, some of these things take a week," Sheriff Gil Gilbertson said. "I would have had to pay overtime."
The sheriff says because of lack of funding, the only cases they investigate are major crimes against a person and even then, they're overwhelmed.
