MEDFORD, Ore.-Rogue Valley Epilepsy Awareness held its first annual walk-a-thon at Hawthorne Park today.
The organization was co-founded by Ashlee Charlton after her daughter, Jocee, was diagnosed with epilepsy and Charlton was unable to find local support.
Funds raised by the organization go to the Doernbecher Pediatric Neurology and Epilepsy Center and Families for Communities.
Ashlee Charlton explains her inspiration for the walk-a-thon. "November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month and we discovered that there was no walks, there was no participation that we could join in to bring awareness or to say that you know here we are a family, so we decided to change that and bring something to our community. We have had an amazing outpour of support."
The event also included an auction with donated items.
The organization hopes to have non-profit status by this time next year.
Charlton adds it is important to, "find someone and even if they are not going through what you're going through, talk to them. It's the best thing you can do."
