Those witnesses also aided the police in arresting the suspect.
The incident happened around 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Northeast Beacon and Fairview bus stop, according to a press release from the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.
A woman was waiting for the bus when the suspect ran past her and grabbed her purse, police said. The suspect knocked her to the ground as he snatched the bag from her shoulder. She was hurt.
People around the bus stop saw what happened and rushed to help the victim. Some of the witnesses followed the suspect to a nearby apartment complex and stood watch until police arrived.
Police surrounded the apartment complex and were able to arrest Anthony Harrell, 23, of Grants Pass without incident. He was arrested on the suspicion of robbery, theft, tampering with evidence and a probation violation.
They were able to recover the victim's purse and its contents from the apartment. Police also found marijuana and stolen property from other recent thefts.
