Deputies had taken John Wayne Haussler, 21, from the county jail to the Curry County General Hospital around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to a press release from the Curry County Sheriff's Office.
Haussler decided to run from deputies while he was being released from the hospital. The escape came as deputies were preparing to take him back to jail. When Haussler ran off, deputies had not had a chance to put handcuffs or shackles on the man.
Deputies say Haussler ran down Leith Road and hid in a creek bed that was less than 500 feet from the hospital.
Deputies chased Haussler and caught him at 12:12 p.m. Officials say Haussler was out of their custody for less than five minutes.
Curry County Sheriff's office was holding Haussler on identity theft charges; now the 21-year-old faces escape in the first degree.
