Officers from the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety began investigating after receiving a call from Three Rivers Medical Center.
Police say the hospital called because the victim had traumatic injuries, according to a press release from the public safety department. A detective responded to find out the circumstances related to the injuries.
During the investigation, police learned the victim was a passenger in a vehicle that was returning to a residence on West Jones Creek Road.
The car was traveling between 20 and 30 miles per hour, when the victim opened the passenger door and stepped out.
Police believe the victim was attempting to street surf.
The man was unable to keep his grip on the vehicle as it kept moving. Police believe he traveled more than 200 feet, ultimately falling under the vehicle.
He was run over by the car's passenger rear tire.
The car's driver -- a 17-year-old -- and another passenger put the victim in the car and took him to the hospital, where he was treated for life-threatening injuries. He was transported to a Eugene hospital to be evaluated by specialists.
Police have interviewed the driver and the other passenger and say they are still investigating. If you have information, call 541-450-6345.
Police do want to remind drivers and passengers: Street surfing is dangerous and illegal.
