JOSEPHINE COUNTY, Ore. -- Voters in Josephine County will be able to weigh in on a tax levy May.
Commissioners voted to put the measure on the ballot last week. If passed, it would increase property taxes in the county by $1.48. The average homeowner will pay about $222 a year.
Commissioner Cherryl Walker says that will create more than $9 million dollars the county will use to pay for the criminal justice system -- including the district attorney's office, jail and sheriff's office.
Walker says they are confident this levy will do better than last year's because it is cheaper. Also, residents have now had to deal first-hand with the county's massive cuts.
"I think last time what it was is we had not really experienced a large reduction in services," Walker said. "And I don't think a lot of people really realized how serious things were when we lost our Secure Our Rural Schools money."
Commissioners say they want to talk to the community about the measure and answer their questions. They encourage anyone with questions to attend their weekly meetings.
