OSU cancels 'blackout' event
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Oregon State University has canceled its promotion to "wear black" at a couple of football games this season because it is seen by some as racially insensitive.
The athletic department had printed "wear black" or "wear orange" on tickets, posters and its website to promote school colors at different games in Reser Stadium.
The department decided to end the promotion after hearing concerns from the president of the Associated Students of OSU Amelia Harris.
She says the community is not ready for a blackout. She referred to a "blackout Reser" campaign in 2007 when some students wore black face paint and some reportedly wore Afro wigs.
